Dave & Lani Hack #1
Dave & Lani Hack #2

Culled from man's wild, pioneer yearnings. Crafted from supple, earthy leather. Classic and real as the people who wear them. This is the story of U.S. Wings authentic aviator jackets, and the people who bring them to you.

A Military-Inspired History

If you thought U.S. Wings jackets came from some New York fashion designer's drawing, think again. U.S. Wings is the only official licensee for Flying Tigers-brand apparel and other government-issue aviator jackets. The company and its product are wearable symbols of free-flying American pride.

A retired U.S. Army man, Sgt. David Hack (CEO of US Wings) has partnered with his wife Lani Hack (President of US Wings) since 1986. Forerunners in marketing, the couple tossed aside mail order marketing and took to the web early. They were one of the first brave web marketers in the country. What inspired them? Call it a great marriage between military bravado and confidence in a classic, authentic product.

USWings.com is the culmination of Sarge and Lani's lifelong love, respect, and association with the US Military. Together, they have grown US Wings into a name you can trust. The Sarge's esteemed word is behind each product, born from the wild blue yonder itself.

Where Are We?

"Our storefront is in Hudson, Ohio, but our customer is the world!"—Sgt. David Hack

U.S. Wings apparel creates attitude in the four corners of the earth—and in the sky. Many of our best clients wouldn't think of cruising the stratosphere without their U.S. Wings jacket. Our client list reads like a jet-set guest list—Hollywood luminaries, international dignitaries, politicians from presidents on down, and the Who's Who of corporate aviation. Just as important, plenty of regular Joes and Janes across the globe also slip into our rich leather jackets to meet their days head on.

Speaking of cruising, fly this web site often in search of new accessories and gift ideas. And if you're nearby, we'd love to see you at our store located at 561 E. Hines Hill Road, Hudson, Ohio 44236.

Sarge was honored to be a recipient of the 2004 Ronald Reagan Gold Medal Award.

Sarge's name is listed at the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor at the New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site in New York.

US Wings Milestones

• Marketing Give-aways — Hack began giving away a white silk aviation scarf and their signature U.S. Wings baseball hat with every flight jacket purchased. When customers saw the quality, they ordered more and the word spread. Guess what the company's second and third biggest seller are today, behind flight jackets?

• U.S. Wings is the sole official licensee for Flying Tigers brand apparel. Some of their jackets are official government issue, making them literally the real thing.

• U.S. Wings jackets were worn on the HBO film, The Tuskegee Airmen. The film producers ordered more than 50 jackets the new-fashioned way—via the U.S. Wings web site.

The U.S. Wings "Crew"

Meet Sgt. David Hack, PhD.
Sgt. Hack"Hello! Over." Those are likely to be the first words you hear from Sgt. David Hack. Once a military man, always a military man, deep down into the ethical and moral fiber. To know him is to know honesty, integrity and honor.

His father served in WWII, and his two oldest brothers served in the USMC and saw combat in Korea. Tragically, the Sarge lost his third brother, who was an aviator. Every day, without fail, the Sarge honors the memory of this man ("a man's man") who was not only his brother, but his best friend, as well.

Sarge joined the US Coast Guard in 1957 and served for four years: Ocean Station Victor USCGC Chautauqua (WHEC-41/NRUD) '57-'58; USCGC Kukui (WAK-186) Hawaii '58; Wake Island Loran Station '58-'59; USCG Station Cape May '59-'60; CG Stations, Shore Units '59; USCGC Sumac (WLR-311) '60; Marine Safety Office Saint Louis MO '60-'61.

He later enlisted in the US Army in 1964, where he eventually became a sergeant with the 1st Infantry Division. He was serving with the Big Red One in Lai Khe, Vietnam in 1968 when he was awarded the Purple Heart for combat injuries that ultimately ended his military career. After a full year in the hospital and three years on medical hold, the Sarge was medically retired from the US Army in 1973 as a SFC E-7.

JeepBefore retiring, the Sarge was an Army recruiter in Ohio and won the title of the nation's Number One Recruiter from 1969-1973, using a customized Army jeep and a custom-painted Corvette as a recruiting tool. In fact, Sgt. Hack's jeep has been enshrined* in the Pratt Museum in Fort Campbell KY, the home of the 101st ABN Division. To see a larger image of Sarge's jeep (the "Hackmobile") and to read the story behind it, click on the jeep or click here (will open in a new window). And check out an article from 1971 about the artist responsible for the custom Corvette (article will open in a new window). You can also read more about Sgt. Hack in an article (highlighted in red) featuring a man the Sarge served under, Maj. Gen. Keith Ware. The Sarge, who has a PhD in Military Science, went on to a career in law enforcement, and retired as Chief of Police from Sebring, Ohio (click to see photo).

*Sgt. Hack's jeep is one of only two jeeps to ever be enshrined in a US Military Museum, the other belonging to Gen. George S. Patton (whose jeep is enshrined at Fort Knox, KY). Since being acquired by the museum, the Sarge's jeep has only been driven once... by Gen. William Westmoreland, who drove it in a parade.

Presidential DinnerThrough the years, the Sarge has continued close military ties. He serves in many organizations and military boards, including the VFW, the National Coalition of the Veterans of the Vietnam War, and was one of the four members of the Military Coalition for then-President George H.W. Bush (along with Col. Bud Day, Maj. Gen. Jim Dosher, and Jack Terberville). And, after 5 years of effort, he was responsible for the commemorative Audie Murphy postage stamp, which was released in 2000.

The synergy Hack has created between business and military experience has earned U.S. Wings prestigious billing in several famous films, and notoriety as the undisputed leader in vintage-styled leather. As an authority on aviation flight gear, Sarge is a sought-after consultant to the movie industry.

"I have a real love for this business. It's the nostalgia of old military memories, and the people that I come in contact with from all walks of life—from guy who can barely afford that first jacket to the owner of the airline company. Everybody's on the same level."—Sgt. David Hack

Sgt. Hack is a proud member of a number of protective services and military associations:

• 101st Airborne Div. Life Member #LM3100
• First Infantry Division
• VFW
• Purple Heart Association
• 101st ABN Division
• Member Ohio Assoc. of Chiefs of Police

With the considerable resources of US Wings, Sarge is also active in many humanitarian efforts, including hurricane disaster relief assistance. US Wings provided specialty equipment, food, clothing and boots to the four dozen officers of the Akron PD and Summit County Sheriff's Department who were deployed to Louisiana in 2005 to assist with relief efforts, ensuring that they were properly equipped to do the job. In recognition of Sarge's efforts and assistance, US Wings received letters of appreciation from the Summit County Sheriff and the Akron PD (click to view), among many others.

Meet Lani Hack and the Kids
Leave it to a woman to bring something so luxuriously cosmopolitan to the general shopping public. Lani dreamed up the idea, sure that her military career man would be a perfect salesman for the product. After all, doesn't everyone love a man in "uniform"? Lani had wanted to become a pharmacist, having studied at college in Pennsylvania. But when she met Sgt. Hack, she knew there had to be something the couple could do to tie back to his military roots.

Today Lani and Dave have three children -- daughter Brittany (an aspiring actress), son Brenton, and daughter Brooke -- who are literally the major stockholders and owners of the business. Lani is president and "makes all the decisions," Hack says, regarding this web site, marketing strategies, buying and more.

Royal Blood

Ffrench Coat of ArmsSarge is a descendent and member of the Royal Ffrench Family of Ireland. The family goes back to John LE Ffrench in 1278, who was originally Norman. The name was de Freynes -- from the latin "fraxinus" (ash tree). The ancestor of the Ffrench family went from France to England with William the Conqueror in the person of Theophilus de Franch, then eventually back to Ireland. Ffrench was one of the most prominent Tribes of Galway and settled in County Wexford, Ireland. Ffrench Castle was built in the year 1400 AD and re-built in 1683 after a major battle and fire that took place in Galway. A member of the Ffrench Family became Sovereign of Galway in 1444 (Sovereign = a person exercising supreme authority; i.e., a Monarch).

James French, Born in Galway County, Ireland circa 1650 (and who spelled his name French), came to America in 1671 and settled in Maryland. In 1785, a group of sixty Catholic families, mostly St. Mary's Parish, formed a pact to migrate to Kentucky from Maryland. The first group of twenty-five families left Maryland in early 1785 and included the family of Ignatus French. In 1911 Viola A. Ffrench of Sunfish Kentucky, the direct descendent of the Royal Ffrench Family of Ireland, was born. The Heir in the United States and of the Royal Family is US Wings CEO David D. Hack, son of Viola Ffrench. In Ireland, even to this day, the family name is spelled "Ffrench" or "ffrench," and there is still a Lord and Lady Ffrench living at Castle Ffrench, at Ballinamore Bridge in County Galway. At the Castle Ffrench are the ruins of the tower which was erected by Joseph Ffrench in 1683.

The Dolphin at the top of the Ffrench Family Crest was said to be an affectionate fish and fond of music. It was the crest of the Dauphin or heir to the throne of France, who is said to have taken his title from his Cognisance. The dolphin is said to be an example of charity and kind affection toward our children. The words "Malo Mori Quam Foedari" translate to "I would rather die than be disgraced."

For more information on the Royal Ffrench Family or any of the other royal families of County Galway, we recommend the book "The Families of County Galway, Ireland" by Michael O'Laughlin.

Our Favorite "Child"—the A-2

The A-2 JacketMen shrug on the A2 flight jacket and in an instant they're suave, debonair, authoritative. Women slip on supple leather and they're svelte, sassy, chic. Why? Because they're wearing a piece of history. In the air, on a motorcycle, at a racetrack or doing the downtown thing—the A2 bomber jacket is probably the most recognizable jacket in the history of the United States.

For more than 50 years, the A-2 has brought us the daring exploits of brave men and strong women. It has warmed the backs of General Claire Chennault's Flying Tigers and made average folks feel like a million bucks on a Saturday night. As American as Harley Davidson motorcycles, Corvette sports cars and Cessna airplanes, the A-2 is still looking good as it enters the new millenium as an always rising star!

As with any booming market in a capitalist society, a number of companies now sell the A-2 jacket. The quality of these replicas can range from perfect down to the last stitch, to shoddy products made for the fast buck. The difference is mind boggling. One of the reasons for the large boom of replica jackets is the scarcity of originals. The original jackets are now worth a bundle, especially if they have any patches or artwork on them. Prices for the replica jackets range from around $100 to several thousand dollars. As the informed consumer should know, a high price does not always mean high quality. While the old saying "you get what you pay for" is true in most cases, U.S. Wings is retailing quality jackets for wholesale prices. According to Sgt. Hack, their prices are barely over cost. What makes the U.S. Wings A-2 jacket a quality jacket at a low price? Dedication and love for the A-2.

US Wings in the Movies

Tuskegee AirmenWith Hack's dedication to military authenticity, the product supplied by US Wings, Inc. is respected in military and movie circles. US Wings jackets have also gained fame through the art of Ron Kaplan. US Wings jackets painted by Kaplan have been presented to famous test pilot General Chuck Yeager, and General Paul Tibbets, pilot of the Enola Gay.

The authenticity of these jackets was also noted by the movie industry. US Wings has supplied jackets to HBO for films about the Flying Tigers and the Red Tails, known as the Tuskegee Airmen.

The Tuskegee Airmen have recently come into the spotlight after a long struggle with anonymity. To celebrate the courage and victories of the Red Tails, Angela Williams and Peggy Darlington of Darlington & Williams Co. have recently created a jacket and colorful patches of the four Red Tail squadron. Angela Williams is the daughter of the late Robert Williams, co-executive producer of the film, an original Tuskegee Airman, and friend of Sgt. Hack. Darlingon stated,

"I've known Bob for over six years and every time I hear his stories I am inspired all over again. Looking over his WWII photographs and memorabilia, Angela and I decided right away that we wanted to put together an authentic replica of the leather jackets the pilots had worn. Until now, the story of these heroes of the Second World War has not been adequately celebrated. We have included some of the original squadron patches of the 332d fighter group as well as new commemorative patches. There's a wealth of history here and our jackets help tell part of the story."

Williams added, "We both felt strongly that the jackets should be authentic. US Wings, Inc. was by far the best source we found for quality A-2 jackets made in America."

Besides the A-2, US Wings has also supplied G-1s, CWU-45Ps, khakis, custom flight jackets and other apparel for various TV series, big-screen movies and plays, including "The 6th Day," "Behind Enemy Lines," "Dogs of War," "Amelia's Journey," "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow," and the hit Fox TV show "24."

Kerosene Cowboys: We also supplied a large variety of aviation gear (including our Goatskin G-1, Black Goatskin A-2, Indy Jones jacket, Sheepskin B-3, G-2 Raider, CWUs, N-2B, flightsuits, helmet bags, sunglasses, Nomex Flyer's Gloves, shirts & caps) to the upcoming movie Kersene Cowboys (based on characters from the novel by Randy Arrington). The movie will be released in the summer of 2010 and will star Cam Gigandet, Rachael Leigh Cook, Bill Pullman & Mario Van Peebles. The Kerosene Cowboys theme song has been released and can be heard by clicking here.
